Still from Loop_Walk by Arthur Kleinjan

Docudrama Series:Arthur Kleinjan October 19 - November 16, 2002Opening Friday October 18, 8PMFor his Paris Looks series (1999), Rotterdam artist Arthur Kleinjan took photographs of tourists asthey posed in front of the Sacré-Coeur in Paris. Far from the conventional holiday snapshot,Kleinjan¹s photographs were taken from behind and without the subject¹s knowledge, simultaneous to thephoto being taken in front of them. The sheer number of images leads to an interesting survey on theconventions of the tourist photo. Each vacationer is involved in a small performance articulating aprecise pose for the camera in front of them. Created in the same year, Loop (walk) is a video that shares a minimalist examination of thebody in space. The camera is focused on crowds of people walking in a single direction through a busycourtyard; meanwhile, a woman walking in the same direction is differentiated only by her slow motionpace. As she reaches the top of the camera¹s frame, the scene fades into the next, and her walk fromthe bottom to the top of the frame starts again. The title of the piece is derived from a simple punon language: the Dutch word for walk is loop. Kleinjan¹s work frequently deals with the body inrelation to space, time, gesture, and language. The Western Front's Docudrama series examines the use of the performative document in contemporary artpractice. These documents include actual recordings of live performances, as well as photography, video, text, audio and other media that serves to describe or suggest performance.from Paris Looks by Arthur KleinjanAdditional support from the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Vancouver
